Things to do in Tomintoul

Tomintoul's dramatic surroundings offer a wealth of outdoor pursuits from challenging climbing, skiing and shooting to horse riding and fishing. Or if you prefer, walking and sight-seeing tours of the surrounding area are available.

There are superb opportunities for a host of special interest visits within easy reach of The Gordon Hotel:

• Follow the Whisky Trail and sample some of Scotland's best known malts including Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Glenfarclas, Cardhu, Dallas Dhu, and Strathisla. Then, back at the hotel, try malts from the Islands and Scottish Lowlands at our specialist malt whisky bar.
  
  
• Schedule your visit for one of the celebrated Highland Games - which generally take place between May and September. Tomintoul's own highland games–among the oldest–generally take place the 3rd Saturday of July, where you can watch Highland dancing, piping, putting the stone, throwing the hammer and tossing the caber.
  
  
• Enjoy a bird twitchers (bird watchers) paradise here in the Highlands. For example, look out for the Osprey at Lock Garten.
  
  
• Visit the Highlands Wildlife Park, the Landmark Forest Heritage Park and the Cairngorm Reindeer Center.

Fishing
The River Avon is rightly renowned for its purity and clarity–as is the Livet. This is a wonderful opportunity to pit your wits against salmon, sea trout, grilse and brown trout amid some of Scotland's most beautiful scenery.

Shooting
Surrounded as we are by large estates and impressive mountains, it's not surprising that this area provides some of Britain's finest game shooting and stalking of roe and red deer. We are also happy to arrange clay pigeon shooting–with professional tuition available for novices.

Horse Riding
Whether you are a beginner in the saddle or an experienced rider, the Tomintoul Riding Center offers a superb range of treks amidst beautiful scenery.

Golf
Within just an hour's drive of Tomintoul, you could be practicing your swing on some of Scotland's most challenging courses–from Moray and Grantown to Braemar and Banchory. Each has its own special character. Even if your game isn't up to par, the scenery more than makes up for it.

Skiing
Skiers of all abilities–from beginners to more experienced skiers–will find all the sport they want around this area. Tomintoul is only seven miles away from the world famous Lecht Ski Center, perfect for skiers of all abilities. Just twenty-four miles away, the Cairngorm Ski Center provides even greater sport. You can easily ski at both centers within a day, and come back to The Gordon Hotel to enjoy the après-ski.
